Why Costa Rica?

Here are a few reasons (taken from the TITP site):

  • In terms of the 2008 Environmental Performance Index, Costa Rica is ranked 1st in the Americas and 5th in the whole world. The EPI is a method of ranking a country’s environmental performance, taking into account factors such as adequate sanitation, water quality, marine protected areas, irrigation stress, and critical habitat protection.
  • Costa Rica is home to half a million different species, out of which 300,000 are insects. It also hosts over 12 different ecosystems due to the country’s abundance of microclimates.
  • Costa Rica protects 26% of its national territory and is considered to be one of the 20 nations with the greatest biodiversity worldwide, although geographically it only represents 0.03% of the Earth’s surface.
  • Costa Rica has committed to becoming the world's first carbon-neutral nation by 2021.

Information about the Program!

The program will highlight Costa Rica’s rich culture, biodiversity, and conservation efforts, focusing on eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture, and resource management. The program will commence with a brief orientation in San Antonio, Texas, and will continue to several destinations in Costa Rica, including San Jose, the capital; Guacimo, where EARTH University is located; Saripiqui; and La Fortuna, near to the active Arenal Volcano.

The Journey to Come!

In July of 2011, I found out I was to be one of 26 participants in the 2011 Toyota International Teacher Program to Costa Rica! What a thrill!!

The application process required us to speak about global issues such as sustainability and eco-awareness. As these are things I teach in my classroom, it seemed like a natural fit!

I am so excited to travel to Costa Rica in November of this year to work with Costa Rican scientists in the rain forests, explore the Arenal volcano, and spend time at Earth University, all in the name of education!

I hope that my followers on this blog are ready to come with me on this journey, and will hopefully be able to experience all the wonders of Costa Rica and its people through this site!
